Teeth Chomping

So over the past few weeks Kevin has been chomping his teeth a lot. It's not grinding or sliding around, but opening and closing quickly. I asked him the other day why he did that and he said, "Because I was eating pretzels." So I thought maybe he just had food stuck in his teeth, but he has been doing it way too often for that to be the cause. I'm pretty sure he is done teething and he does not seem to be in any pain or discomfort. I've also inspected his teeth and they appear fine. A quick good search for "teeth chomping in toddlers" returned a ton of results about night teeth grinding which is not what I am seeing. Thoughts?

ETA: I just remembered that I have seen him a few times with fingers in his mouth on both sides simultaneously, perhaps there is a bit of discomfort going on?

I'm laughing as I write this, but I don't know how old your son is. My son is 2 and he went through that phase, so did my daughter who is now 5. It was something with the noise-when we do it, we recognize that it makes a noise "inside" our heads but to them, they're trying to figure out what is making the noise, where it's coming from, what the feeling is, etc. Fingers in the mouth is normal for almost all kids, especially kids in this phase. My daughter does this all the time, and I ask what she's doing and she says "Feeling my teef" (she lost her 2 front bottom teeth so she talks silly). I wouldn't be concerned unless it becomes a habit lasting 3-5 months. Just ignore it and if it goes away, it was just a phase! :)
